Europe Trip: Day 3 {Lofer, Austria}

Well my original plan was to do one blog post for each place we visited. However we did so much in Lofer that I had to break it up, so this post is only our third day of the trip. We departed Frymburk via the little ferry that fits only a couple cars on it and transports you across the lake. It was fun to be on a small ferry, I haven't been on one like that since we lived in Nova Scotia. lofer1

After a beautiful drive through the country side of the Czech Republic and in to Austria we arrived at our second accommodation of our trip - Haus Patricia. Haus Patricia is a gorgeous pension run by a super sweet and hospitable British couple. Its located in a small ski village called Lofer. We were fortunate to be there during their "off season" between the busy months of skiing and the summer. This meant we escaped crowds and could explore all over on our own.

It wasn't the best day as far as weather so after we settled in we discussed what activities we could do in the rain. Our host, Amanda, had given me a brochure with some gorges and caves on it that she said were neat. We picked the biggest gorge, Seisenbergklamm, and set out to explore after eating a quick lunch.

We didn't really know what to expect and so when we started to walk through it we were completely blown away. It was one of the coolest things any of us had seen. It made the Flume seem like nothing special!

After we were finished with that we headed to Lamprechtshöhle. Lamprechtshöhle is one of the largest caves in the world at 51 km long! It was crazy and a bit scary to walk all the way in and up to the top of the stairs.

When we got back to town after those adventures we walked around the little village for a bit before deciding on a place to eat dinner. You can tell from the pictures that it certainly is off season - we were the only ones walking around for the majority of the time!

More fun from our time in Lofer and the surrounding areas in Austria to come!
